CHIN Talk   News & Events

Nine cities, Nine events, One theme:
Human Immunology

What do vaccines, allergies and diseases such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis have in common?  The answer is a key role for our immune system.  This collection of cells and tissues in our bodies not only protect us from infection but also can, under certain circumstances, cause disease.  How the human immune system works in health and in disease is the focus of Human Immunology.   In celebration of the International Day of Immunology, Monday, April 29, 2013, the CIHR Human Immunology Network (CHIN) is hosting Café Scientifique events from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in nine cities across Canada.  CHIN is a resource network that facilitates, promotes and enhances research about the human immune system, and its translation into clinical care and public policy.

These events will be free to the public and will feature national leaders in the field of Immunology.  Each Café will provide an informal setting for learning and discussion about timely topics concerning our health featuring three to four researchers and/or clinicians who are experts in these topics.  Depending on the location these could include: arthritis, vaccines, organ transplantation, allergies and immunotherapies for cancer.

"Knowledge dissemination and community outreach are critical to the mission of the Canadian CIHR Human Immunology Network. These Café Scientifiques on Human Immunology, from coast to coast, are a reflection of how clinicians, researchers and the community at large can discuss advances in Human Immunology and how these advances improve our quality of life,” says Joaquin Madrenas, CHIN Executive Director.  “It is a great opportunity for everyone to learn about the immune system and to realize the enormous value of investing in health research."
